Hakimi Clinches 2024 Lion d’Or, Edging Out Lookman and Salah
Paris Saint Germain and Moroccan fullback Achraf Hakimi have been awarded the 2024 Lion d’Or, recognising him as the standout men’s footballer from September 2023 to September 2024. This prestigious award, presented by Al-Mountakhab newspaper, is based on votes from 41 media outlets, including journalists and sports experts.
Hakimi secured the top spot with 162 points, outpacing Atalanta's Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, who finished second with 96 points, and Morocco’s Sofiane Rahimi of Al Ain, who came third with 90 points. The criteria for the award included achievements with national and club teams, individual influence, sportsmanship, and public image.
The Moroccan star played a pivotal role in PSG’s 2023-2024 season, helping the club secure a domestic treble with victories in Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the Trophée des Champions. Internationally, Hakimi was integral to Morocco’s bronze medal win at the 2024 Olympic Games and PSG’s UEFA Champions League semifinal run.
Other notable finalists included Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz 4th place and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah 5th place. Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface ranked 7th, while South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams secured 9th position.
Hakimi’s influence continues to resonate as he remains a top contender for the 2024 CAF Awards Player of the Year, alongside Lookman and Ronwen Williams.
